Turkey size and cooking time calculator
Set the meal date and time first. The oven window is a guide. Use a thermometer before serving.
How we worked this out
- Illinois Extension, Choosing Your Turkey: Allow 1 lb per person, or 1.5 lb for leftovers. The starting values are an 8 lb minimum bird and a 24 lb largest bird. Change them to match what you can buy and fit in the oven.
- Illinois Extension, Cooking Safety: The USDA 325 F weight table gives a roast range, 20 to 30 minutes of rest, and 165 F in the thigh, wing, breast and stuffing.
- Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, How to Thaw a Turkey: Fridge thaw takes about 24 hours per 4 to 5 lb at 40 F or below. This plan uses the safer 4 lb end. Cold water takes 30 minutes per lb. Change it every 30 minutes and cook immediately.
- Illinois Extension, Storing Leftovers: Refrigerate leftovers in shallow containers within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90 F.
How the estimate works
The buying amount and roast table come from Illinois Extension. Nebraska-Lincoln Extension gives the fridge and cold-water thaw times.
A fresh turkey should be bought 1 to 2 days before cooking. Check that each bird and pan fit your oven.
